Early reading ability has long been associated with brightness. Theoretically, about 15 percent of all children achieve significantly above the norm, i.e., the average for the grade or age group.

NURTURING THE “GIFTED” READER

 

If you have a child who is a ‘gifted’ reader, it is important not to underestimate his/her reading ability.  Two major approaches have been followed for nurturing and developing fast-developing readers – enrichment and acceleration. 

 

Enrichment means supplementary reading, or reading widely.  This can come in the forms of both fictional genres and non-fictional topics.  Accelerated programs try to match difficulty/level of reading materials to the child’s level of ability, for example by introducing ‘harder’ books/contents with new vocabulary.  For best results, both methods are essential.

 

To conclude, a combination of acceleration and enrichment is needed for the reading development of the child who is ahead of his/her peers.  However, the wide range of reading abilities in a classroom makes it challenging to nurture a fast-developing reader to his/her fullest.  That is because many precocious readers are reading on levels above most children in their classes.  Hence the school classroom may not be the best place for fast readers to find materials on their level of development. 

 

One good alternative is an afterschool environment which provides plenty of books available on higher levels for your child’s independent reading.
